After 39 years of service, G\u00e9rard \u201cTi-Noir\u201d Martel passed away following a courageous battle with illness, leaving a profound void within the great Mousquiri family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">To honour the memory of this cornerstone of the tournament, the Jean Dion Trophy, named after the founding president, now bears the name Jean Dion\u2013G\u00e9rard Martel Trophy. This award is presented annually to volunteers who distinguish themselves through their commitment and dedication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">This year, the trophy will be awarded to two long-serving volunteers:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Daniel Bernard, responsible for ticket sales at the entrance and security, and Patrick Nault, volunteer referee and bar attendant, among other roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The official presentation will take place on Friday, February 6 at 6:40 p.m., during the tournament\u2019s opening ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Organizing Committee \u2013 61st Edition<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Under the leadership of Jocelyne Morel, Tournament President, the organizing committee for the 61st edition of the Mousquiri Tournament is made up of dedicated and passionate volunteers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Annie Daigle, Registrar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Guy Marchand, Public Relations, Marketing and Secretary<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pyer-Lyne Deslauriers, Trophy and Medal Sales, Protocol<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Jonathan Fontaine, Mascot Committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Jean-Pierre Flamand, Procurement and Supplies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Julie Lachapelle, Bar Committee Coordinator<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Gabriel Lyster, Security<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Pascal Fontaine, Player Access and Dressing Rooms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Guillaume Daigle-Roy, Operations and Game Management<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">A true team effort that ensures the smooth running of the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The Oldest M-11 Tournament in the Eastern Townships<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">With great pride \u2014 and no surprise \u2014 the Mousquiri Tournament is the oldest M-11 (Atom) tournament in Quebec, as well as the oldest hockey tournament of any category in the Eastern Townships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">For more than 60 years, the tournament has consistently welcomed players aged 9 and 10, maintaining the same age category despite changes in terminology over time: mosquito, moustique, and now M-11. While the name has evolved, the spirit of the tournament has remained unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">This year marks the 39th edition of the tournament as a national event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Local Teams in the Spotlight<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The City of Richmond will be well represented at this year\u2019s Mousquiri Tournament, with several teams competing across multiple divisions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Three teams will compete in the Participation division, one team will take part in Class C, while two teams will be entered in Class B under the name Wild Desjardins Richmond-Windsor.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The host city will also field one team in Class AA, highlighting its strong presence at every level of competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">A Host City with a Winning Tradition<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Over the past 60 editions, the host city has captured 14 championship titles, an impressive record that reflects the strength and vitality of minor hockey in Richmond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Among the most recent successes are the Wild Desjardins Richmond-Windsor\u2019s Class A championship last year, as well as a historic double championship in 2024 in both Classes A and B.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Other titles earned by local teams over the years include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">M\u00e9tro Brunelle du Val-Saint-Fran\u00e7ois (Class A, 2015),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Express de Richmond (Class B, 2006),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Islanders (Class B, 2001 and 1993),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Olympiques (Class B, 2000 and 1974),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Riverains, champions in Class CC (1986 and 1997) and Invitation Class (1979 and 1984),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">as well as a Class C championship in 1980.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">The Most Decorated Cities<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Several cities stand out for their consistent success at the Mousquiri Tournament.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Teams from Drummondville and Sherbrooke lead the way with 21 championships each, followed by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Richmond (14),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Val-des-Sources (Asbestos) (11),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Acton Vale (9),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Saint-Eustache and La Tuque (7 spectators, every day of the tournament \u2014 a wonderful way to make the event accessible to the entire community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Official Tournament Opening<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The official opening ceremony will take place on Friday, February 6 at 6:40 p.m., just prior to the AA-level game between the Sherbrooke Harfangs (1) and the Desjardins Wild of Richmond-Windsor, the host team of the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The ceremony will feature the colour guard from Branch No. 15 of the Royal Canadian Legion of Richmond, as well as provincial, federal and municipal representatives, along with several tournament sponsors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt\">Championship Trophies<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The trophies awarded to champions in each division bear meaningful names, paying tribute to individuals who have left a lasting mark on hockey and volunteerism in Richmond:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Class AA \u2013 Claude \u201cPee-Wee\u201d Roy Trophy<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Awarded in honour of this outstanding hockey player from Richmond, who excelled with the Royal de Lac-M\u00e9gantic Junior A team in the 1970s and later with the Moncton Blue Eagles in the university league. He tragically lost his life in a car accident in 1977 at the age of 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Class BB \u2013 Roger Martel Trophy<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Named in honour of a founding volunteer of the tournament, who served as registrar for more than 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Class A \u2013 Sylvain Lefebvre Trophy<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Honouring this Richmond native who played in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers.
